What’s better than your favorite sandwich for lunch? Eating it while knocking out submission goals. Each month, Story Street shares open or upcoming submission opportunities we’re looking at, to get you hungry for publication. Grab a sandwich, be a grinder, and sink your teeth into those subs! 


Copper Nickel | Deadline: March 1

This University of Colorado Denver literary journal is running their regular submission opening through March 1.

Fee: $3 | Pay: $30 per printed page.

Type: Fiction/Poetry/Essays

Notes: ‘Literary’ focus. Home of several past literary award winners.


Swamp Pink| Deadline: opens 1 Feb, closes 31 May

Fee: Yes | Pay: Per piece: $40/poem, $0.05/word for prose, max payout $200.

Type: Fiction/Non (up to 7.5k words); Poetry (3-6 poems)

Notes: swamp pink is at the College of Charleston. (Alex note: They choose very pretty pictures to pair with their pieces.)


This World of Vile Wonder: Horror Tales of the Scientific Revolution | Deadline: Feb 28

Historical horror fiction. “Story must be set between the years 1500 and 1700 ce. Any category of science from the period welcome. With setting and details, historical accuracy is vital”

Fee: No | Pay: $75

Type: Fiction

Notes: Anthology. 5,000 (firm) to 10,000 words


Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction| Deadline: Rolling

Fee: Yes | Pay: Per piece: $45

Type: Flash Nonfiction up to 750 words

Notes: With over 10,000 unique visitors per month, publication in Brevity can be a career launcher. They publish Pulitzer Prize winners as well as unpublished authors.


The Furious Gazelle| Deadline: Rolling

Fee: No | Pay: No monetary payment

Type: Short fiction, micro fiction, poetry, short plays, novel excerpts, and creative non-fiction.

LENGTH: Poetry up to 5 pages; Fiction and Nonfiction up to 7,000 words.

Notes: Looking for compulsively readable stories that slant toward “the annoyance, pitfalls, and humor of existence.”


The Writers Workout Potluck |Deadline: Feb 20

Fee: No | Prize: First Place – Duotrope free for two years

The Q1 challenge is “About an Egg.” Guest judge Madelyn Postman recommends paying close attention to your narrative arc.

Type: Fiction up to 5,000 words

Notes: This is a quarterly contest with only one submission per quarter and no simultaneous submissions.


The Suburban Review | Deadline: February 9

Fee: No |Pay: Fiction – up to $450, Poetry – up to $500

Looking for submissions to the TSR #37: BOTTOM.

Type: Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, Poetry, Comics and Art

Notes: Simultaneous submissions allowed


Wow Women on Writing |Deadline: February 28

Winter 2025 Flash Fiction Contest

Fee: $10

Type: All genres of fiction between 250 – 750 words.

Notes: Only 300 entries accepted, so get your submission in early. Cash prizes. Guest judge is literary agent Kristina Pérez with Pérez Literary & Entertainment.




The Masters Review |Deadline: February 2

Winter Short Story Contest for New Writers

Fee: $20 |$3,000 first prize and online publication.

Type: All genres of fiction up to 6,000 words.

Notes: Genre fiction is not excluded, but historically Masters Review editors prefer genre texts to have a strong literary bent.
