Once a month we provide our newsletter readers a list of publications and contests that are open for submissions. This month, we have a special contest we recommend for the novelists out there… even if you haven’t started writing yet.
The Gutsy Great Novelist Page One Prize is accepting entries until July 16, 5:00 PM (ET). A dynamite first page excites and engages the reader, usually by teasing out the first tastes of character, plot, and theme, while rough-sketching the world and introducing a coherent narrative voice. Through a great first page, the reader starts to trust that the writer can tell a story worth reading, but even trust is not enough. If the reader doesn’t NEED to turn to page two, the author has failed.
Whew! All that, in about 250 words.
The entry fee is $20. First place is $1,000, and second and third places are awarded $500 and $250.
